According to a poll taken by Hill-HarrisX, the majority of registered voters support an assault weapons ban. However, according to a Small Arms Survey of 2017, there are 393,347,000 million firearms in the United States.
The population of the United States in 2017 was 326,474,000, and according to the Small Arms Survey, approximately one million persons have a registered firearm. But, there are 392,273,257 unregistered firearms in the hands of civilians.
Further, according to a new nationwide poll from the Hill sixty-nine percent of registered voters support banning assault-style weapons. Regardless, there are approximately five to ten million AR-15s in the United States.
The numbers do not add up. According to a retired Tulsa police officer Dianna Muller, should the United States pass a ban on assault weapons, that could effectively make 150 million persons in the United States felons.
Muller suggests that there are over one hundred million persons in the United States who own an assault-style weapon, the 2017 Small Arms Survey suggests that there are almost four hundred million guns in the United States. However, again, according to the Hill poll, sixty-nine percent of registered voters support an assault weapons ban, either gun owners are supporting a ban or the polls are off.
